Warning Signs of Cooling System Failure

If your car overheats, major problems could arise, such as a cracked engine block. But as long as your cooling system is working like it should, then your vehicle will have the mechanisms in place to regulate the heat. Main components of your cooling system include the water pump, thermostat, radiator, overflow tank and hoses. If there's a problem with any aspect of your cooling system, then you'll want to address it ASAP. At Harting Automotive, our local mechanics are experts at diagnosing and repairing cooling system issues. Give us a call if you notice any of the following symptoms of trouble.

Common Signs of a Cooling System Problem

Cooling system leaks are often the cause of overheating. If your coolant has gotten concerningly low, then a leak may be present. With an external coolant leak, you may notice bright green fluid accumulating where you've been parked, though your coolant could be another color like pink or yellow. If coolant is leaking internally, then you could see white smoke, which is a sign of a blown head gasket. Another possible indication of a coolant leak is that your coolant warning light has illuminated.

Another sign of cooling system trouble is that your temperature gauge has soared into the red zone. When this occurs, it's best to safely get off the road. At that point, you can call up the shop and explain what's going on. Then the mechanic can give you professional guidance on whether it seems your car is okay to drive any further, or if you'll be better off playing it safe and getting a tow.

If you see steam emerging from beneath your hood, then you've got a sign that your coolant has hit its boiling point. If there's a coolant leak, then the fluid's pressure is liable to drop, lowering its boiling point. In situations where you need to add coolant, be sure that your engine thoroughly cools down before you do this. If your engine is still hot when you open the cap to add coolant, then burning hot fluid may shoot up at you.
